Day 21 – Character Development
Chihiro (Spirited Away)
Out of all the Ghibli films, Chihiro undergoes one of the most apparent dynamic characters changes. In the beginnings she’s portrayed as a fairly ungrateful and inflexible child who is less than ecstatic to be moving away from her home and her friends.
As the story continues, we get to see Chihiro’s strengths solidify with helpful nudges along the way. What I appreciated most about her character arc was that it was very gradual and seamless for the most part. There wasn’t necessarily a single moment that screamed “I’m having an epiphany and will be stronger starting now!”. It was the collective moments of her in the spirit world that added up to Chihiro becoming stronger than what she was not long ago, in many ways.
